Under the hood, the tool re-encodes your video with the H.264 codec and lets you choose a compression level. A lower CRF (constant rate factor) value keeps more detail and produces a larger file; a higher value compresses harder and produces a smaller file at the cost of some sharpness. We've mapped this to three simple presets — Light, Balanced, and Maximum — so you don't need to understand codec settings to get a good result.

This tool works well for shrinking phone-recorded videos before sending them over WhatsApp or email, preparing clips for faster website loading, or fitting a video under a platform's upload size limit. Because everything happens client-side, very large files may take a little longer depending on your device's processing power, but there is no arbitrary file-size cap imposed by us.

Compression settings involve a trade-off between file size and visual fidelity, and the right choice depends on what you're using the video for. A clip destined for a WhatsApp group chat can tolerate heavy compression because it will be viewed on a small phone screen, while a video meant for a large presentation screen benefits from the Light setting to keep fine detail crisp.

One thing many people don't realize is that re-compressing an already-compressed video repeatedly causes cumulative quality loss known as generation loss. Whenever possible, always compress from the original, highest-quality source file rather than compressing a file that has already been compressed once before, to get the best possible balance of size and clarity.
